How to Use AI Coding Assistants Without Losing Quality

AI coding assistants can save hours on repetitive work, but they also produce confident mistakes. These habits keep the speed and remove most of the risk.

1. Give clear, specific prompts

State the language, framework, expected input and output, and any constraints. "Write a function that validates a Korean phone number and returns true or false" works far better than "validate phone."

2. Review every line you ship

Treat AI output like code from a new teammate. Read it, run it and understand it. If you cannot explain what a block does, do not deploy it.

3. Test the edge cases

Assistants often handle the happy path and miss empty values, long strings and unusual characters. Write tests for these cases before trusting the result.

4. Never paste secrets

Do not share API keys, passwords or client data in prompts. Replace them with placeholders and keep real values in environment variables.

5. Check security and dependencies

Verify that suggested libraries exist, are maintained and are safe. Look for unsafe patterns such as unsanitized user input or string-built database queries.

6. Use AI for what it does best

Boilerplate, refactoring, documentation, regular expressions and explaining unfamiliar code are good uses. Architecture and business decisions should stay with you.
